What this video covers

Experienced SailPoint IIQ interviews rarely ask for definitions. They describe a broken situation and ask what you would do. This video gives you one answer method and seven scenarios that come up repeatedly, each with what the interviewer is testing, a strong answer, and the follow-up question to expect.

The method has six steps. Restate the problem and its scope — one user or hundreds. Locate the failing stage in the pipeline: source, aggregation, identity refresh, workflow and approval, provisioning, target system. Collect evidence: task results, provisioning transactions, request status and logs. Fix the root cause, whether it is data, configuration or a rule, rather than re-running the job. Verify the access really changed on the target. Prevent it from happening again. Interviewers listen for this order because it shows you have supported a real system.

The seven scenarios: a leaver who still has Active Directory access the day after HR terminated them; accounts that do not correlate to identities; a separation-of-duties conflict inside an access request; certification revokes that never remove access; birthright roles for a Finance department; a request that shows complete while the user has nothing on the target; and a two-level approval workflow. Every answer is checked against SailPoint IdentityIQ documentation, and the sources are listed under the video on YouTube.

Who it is for: SailPoint IIQ administrators, developers and support engineers preparing for an experienced-level interview, and IAM professionals moving across from another product who want to know how IIQ interviews differ.

Written answers to all seven scenarios are in the blog post SailPoint Scenario-Based Interview Questions. Frequently Asked Questions

Restate the problem and its scope; locate the failing stage in the pipeline (source, aggregation, identity refresh, workflow and approval, provisioning, target system); collect evidence from task results, provisioning transactions, request status and logs; fix the root cause instead of re-running the job; verify the access changed on the target; and prevent a repeat. The method is explained at 0:28 and used in every scenario.
Lifecycle events are evaluated during identity refresh, so first confirm that the HR aggregation brought in the termination and that a refresh which processes events ran after it. Then check that the Leaver event is enabled and its trigger matches the value HR actually sent. If the event fired, open Provisioning Transactions: pending items are retried, failures are not, so fix the cause and resubmit. Scenario 1 starts at 1:20.
Start with the task result: how many accounts were created, updated or errored. Correlation is configured on the application using attributes or conditions; a correlation rule is only needed when the matching logic is more complex. Then compare the actual values on both sides — the usual culprits are blanks, prefixes and leading zeros, such as E45821 in the application against 00045821 in HR. Scenario 2 starts at 2:22.
IdentityIQ builds a provisioning plan and splits it per target; each part goes to a direct connector, an integration or a manual work item. Integrations cannot report back that they finished, so their requests are treated as queued — complete can mean handed off, not done. Check provisioning transactions, review any before-provisioning rule that changes the plan, check the connector logs, and confirm with the next aggregation. Scenario 6 starts at 6:01.
Because assignment and provisioning are separate steps. A business role models the job and is assigned by a rule such as department equals Finance during identity refresh; IT roles bundle the actual entitlements and are linked to it as required (must-have) or permitted (optional, on request). The refresh must also be set to provision assignments, or nothing reaches Active Directory or the ERP. For movers, make sure de-provisioning of de-assigned roles is not disabled. Scenario 5 starts at 5:01.
