Okta is best known for sign-in, so many teams now ask whether Okta Identity Governance (OIG) can do the job of a dedicated governance platform such as SailPoint. This guide compares the two on documented features, limits, cost model, analyst views and careers, using Okta's own documentation, SailPoint's published claims and third-party reviews, each attributed and dated. It covers the SailPoint governance platforms, IdentityIQ (IIQ) and Identity Security Cloud (ISC), against the Okta product only.

Quick answer: Okta Identity Governance (OIG) is Okta's governance add-on, made up of Lifecycle Management, Workflows and Access Governance. It suits organisations already standardised on Okta for sign-in. SailPoint IdentityIQ and Identity Security Cloud are standalone governance platforms with a longer history in complex, hybrid estates. Neither is better in every case: the right choice depends on your application estate, audit depth and existing Okta footprint.

This page covers only the Okta governance product. For the wider platform comparison read SailPoint vs Okta 2026, and for a three-way view see SailPoint vs Okta vs Saviynt.

What is Okta Identity Governance (OIG)?

Okta Identity Governance (OIG) is Okta's identity governance add-on, which Okta's documentation defines as a solution comprising Lifecycle Management, Workflows and Access Governance. Access Governance delivers four capabilities: Access Requests, Access Certifications, governance-focused reports and Entitlement Management. OIG requires Okta Lifecycle Management as its foundation.

Okta's help documentation also lists resource collections, resource owners, resource labels, separation-of-duties rules, reports, APIs and system log events as part of the governance feature set, and says certifications can support compliance needs such as SOC 2 and SOX (sources: Okta Identity Governance documentation and the Okta Identity Governance FAQs, both checked 5 October 2026). For the category itself, see our explainer on identity governance and administration (IGA).

How do Okta Identity Governance and SailPoint compare feature by feature?

Both platforms cover access requests, access certifications, lifecycle automation and separation-of-duties rules. The difference lies in depth and origin: Okta Identity Governance extends an authentication platform, while SailPoint IdentityIQ and Identity Security Cloud were built as governance products. The table lists Okta's documented capabilities beside the closest SailPoint equivalents.

Where does Okta Identity Governance fall short, and where does SailPoint?

Okta's own Identity Governance FAQ, checked on 5 October 2026, lists requestable resources as Okta applications, Okta-sourced groups, admin roles and entitlement bundles, and says app-sourced groups such as Active Directory groups are not currently supported for access requests. That scope is the most concrete limit to verify before choosing OIG for a hybrid estate.

SailPoint makes stronger claims on its comparison page: that it offers "250+ governance-enabled connectors" while Okta has "only a fraction" that support entitlement management. That is vendor marketing and we have not verified it, so ask both vendors for a connector list covering your own applications. A third-party review published on 6 April 2026 by MultiplierHQ reports limited functionality with non-Okta systems and no CSV or Excel export of certification campaign results (review). Treat it as one opinion, and re-test against the current release.

SailPoint has trade-offs too. IdentityIQ is configuration- and rule-heavy, which is why the 14-module IIQ curriculum spends whole modules on Application Rules, Custom Workflow and the Configuration File. SailPoint is also a governance layer only: sign-in, SSO and MFA still come from a separate platform, which is often Okta.

Is Okta Identity Governance an add-on, and what does it cost?

Okta describes the Okta Identity Governance (OIG) add-on as including Access Governance, Lifecycle Management and Workflows, and its public pricing page, checked on 5 October 2026, publishes no per-user price for it and directs buyers to sales. Total cost therefore depends on negotiated quotes, the Okta suite you already own and implementation effort.

SailPoint's comparison page argues that OIG "is an add-on to the required Workforce Identity suite" and that costs compound as governance needs grow, while saying its own governance is included out of the box. Again, that is a vendor claim. A fair cost comparison covers three years and includes licences, implementation partner time, connectors, and the administrators each platform needs, not list price alone.

How do analysts and reviewers rate Okta Identity Governance versus SailPoint?

Gartner's 2026 Market Guide for Identity Governance and Administration, published on 28 August 2026, lists Okta as a Representative Vendor in the full-suite category; a Market Guide is a research note, not a Magic Quadrant. On Gartner Peer Insights on 5 October 2026, SailPoint showed 4.8 stars from 824 reviews and Okta 4.4 from 248.

Okta announced the Market Guide recognition on its newsroom, and the ratings come from Gartner's Okta vs SailPoint comparison page. A 2019 SecurityBrief report said SailPoint had been named a Leader in every Gartner IGA Magic Quadrant published up to that date, so check Gartner for the current edition. Ratings reflect different customer mixes and review counts, so use them as a starting point, not a verdict.

Can Okta Identity Governance and SailPoint be used together?

Yes, many enterprises run Okta for workforce sign-in and SailPoint for governance, because the tools answer different questions: Okta controls how users log in, while SailPoint governs who should have access and why. Choosing Okta Identity Governance instead of SailPoint is a separate decision from choosing Okta for authentication.

That distinction is why a company can be an Okta customer and still evaluate SailPoint. Our broader comparison explains the split in its section on why the platforms are designed to integrate, not compete (SailPoint vs Okta 2026), and our SailPoint IIQ vs ISC guide helps if SailPoint is your choice and you must pick between its two platforms.

Which should you choose or learn: Okta Identity Governance or SailPoint?

Choose Okta Identity Governance when the organisation already standardises on Okta, most applications are Okta-integrated and the need is access requests plus periodic reviews. Choose SailPoint when the estate is hybrid, audits demand entitlement-level control, or role and policy models are complex. Learners targeting governance careers can start with SailPoint and add Okta later.

The concepts transfer between the platforms. The table shows the SailPoint IIQ module that teaches each idea beside the Okta capability that does a similar job. It is IAM Careers' conceptual mapping, not an official equivalence. The full module list is on our SailPoint IIQ curriculum modules page.

What do jobs and regulation look like in India, the US and the UK?

Governance hiring in all three markets is driven by audit regulation more than by vendor choice: SOX and HIPAA in the United States, UK GDPR and FCA rules in the United Kingdom, and regulators such as RBI and SEBI for Indian financial firms. That is why governance skills appear in banking, healthcare and consulting job descriptions whichever platform is named.

In India, Naukri listed 904 SailPoint ISC-related and 685 IdentityIQ-specific openings on 9 July 2026, as reported in our what is SailPoint ISC guide; see SailPoint ISC jobs in India for employers and cities. When we searched for "Okta Identity Governance" jobs on 5 October 2026, the results were mostly Okta's own careers pages for product engineers, so practitioner demand for Okta is likely to appear under titles such as Okta engineer or IAM engineer; verify on Naukri and LinkedIn before planning around it. In the United States, Okta's FAQ says OIG is available in Okta's FedRAMP environment for US Military.

We have not published an Okta Identity Governance salary figure because we found no sourced one. For SailPoint pay in the US and UK see SailPoint salary in USA and UK, and for the wider picture our IAM career paths page. International salary figures are market estimates from public job listings and salary aggregators. Actual compensation varies by employer, location, experience, and individual negotiation. Frequently Asked Questions

Okta Identity Governance (OIG) is Okta's identity governance add-on. Okta's documentation defines it as a solution comprising Lifecycle Management, Workflows and Access Governance, where Access Governance covers access requests, access certifications, governance-focused reports and entitlement management. It lets organisations that already use Okta for sign-in request, approve and periodically review access to applications and groups without adding a separate governance vendor.
It can for some organisations and not for others. Okta Identity Governance suits companies standardised on Okta with mostly Okta-integrated applications and straightforward review needs. SailPoint IdentityIQ and Identity Security Cloud are built as standalone governance platforms and are more often chosen for hybrid estates, deep entitlement-level control and complex role or policy models. Compare both against your own applications and audit requirements before deciding.
Okta's Identity Governance FAQ, checked on 5 October 2026, lists requestable resources as Okta applications, Okta-sourced groups, admin roles and entitlement bundles, and says app-sourced groups such as Active Directory groups are not currently supported for access requests. Certification can cover app-sourced groups and entitlements. Confirm current support for each of your applications with Okta, because product scope changes between releases.
Neither price can be stated reliably from public information. Okta's pricing page, checked on 5 October 2026, describes the Okta Identity Governance add-on as including Access Governance, Lifecycle Management and Workflows, but publishes no per-user price and directs buyers to sales. Compare quotes over three years, including implementation partner effort, connectors and the internal administrators each platform needs, rather than list price alone.
For governance careers in India, many employers and consultancies advertise SailPoint IdentityIQ or Identity Security Cloud skills, and Naukri listed 904 ISC-related and 685 IdentityIQ-specific openings on 9 July 2026. Governance concepts such as joiner-mover-leaver, access certification and separation of duties carry across platforms. Learning one governance platform in depth first, then adding Okta, is a sensible order for most career changers.
